Cooktown Orchid (English)
Description
The generic name Dendrobium is derived from Greek 'dendron'=tree and 'bios'=life; plants of many species of this genus perch on tree trunks and branches. The specific name phalaenopsis from the Greek 'phalaina'='moth, due to flower's resemblance to a moth (ANGB, 1985).
Indonesian people called this orchid "Anggrek Larat"(Anggrek=orchid) because it’s found for the first
time in Larat Island, Tanimbar, Maluku, Indonesia (Kurniawan and Pratama, 2010, Icha, 2012). It's also known as Cooktown Orchid in Australia, refers to the northern Queensland town, Cooktown, named by Captain Cook after his ship repaired there in 1170 (ANGB, 1985).
It can live well in hot
areas with a height of 0-150 meters asl. The flowers are arranged in a bunch of
bunches with a length of about 60 cm. Each bunch consists of 6-24 florets. The
petals and the sepals are purple (Kurniawan and Pratama, 2010, Icha, 2012 ).
The colour of the flower can also have some varieties from white until red
(Icha, 2012 ).
Flower
Life Span on Plant

Distribution
It’s native of Maluku,
Indonesia. So it became the flora identity of Maluku Province (Kurniawan and
Pratama, 2010). But it also symbol of Queensland and used in colouring many
hybrids. It's native of northern Australia and New Guinea (Fulcher, 2003).
In Indonesia, it’s distributed widely
as decorative plants.
Treatment
There
are a lot of tutorials about it. But honestly, what my family did was to use
coconut fibrous planting medium and put it in enough light (Full sun), and the last to
water it with rice washing water.
